Click to Enlarge We welcome your visit to our website and hope your visit will be a pleasant one. AMVETS Post 124 was chartered August 15, 2005 in Maysville KY and very quickly responded to the needs of the community in many ways.
One need that was identified from many veterans and citizens of the community, was the need to give recognition and honor for those who served and made the ultimate sacrafice for their country, those who have served and passed on and those serving today in our military.
AMVETS members and their Auxiliary immediately began the monumental task of developing and building "THE AMERICAN VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK" . While the task seemed almost impossible, AMVETS working with city officials were successful in locating a site to construct the park. The park is situated on one of the communitys' historical tracts of land that was the site of one of Kentuckys earliest settlers, Simon Kenton. The park is located at the entrance of the "Simon Kenton Homestead" property southwest side of the Maysville Community, adjacent to Martin Luther King Boulevard (HWY 9 ) and Meadowview Medical Center.
The park is nearing completion with just one small project remaining. AMVETS Post 124 was the organization responsible for raising the the funds to bring the park to the point of completion. However, it would not have been possible with out the support of the city officials, F.O.P.,K.C.s, United Way, St.Pat School Parents, Lions Club of Bracken County and several individuals from with in the community who volunteered their time supporting AMVETS's in the fund raising efforts, and for this we are most thankful. The photographs displayed were recently taken and do not adquately display the beauty of the park as would be seen during the summer season. We invite all who may be traveling through the area to visit the park and experience the awakening of your gratitude and appreciation for our brave men and women serving our nation. Comments and questions may be directed to AMVETS Post 124, 606 759 9535, or email the Post Commander, hookgene@yahoo.com Thank you for visiting our site.
Click to Enlarge The theme for the park has been somewhat shadowed during the development and construction and will now be visible to all who visit our photograpic display. As you enter the park you will notice the formation of the flag display is shaped in the form of a teardrop. This formation very clearly is indicative of the theme. " A TEARDROP FOR A FALLEN SOLDIER", Click the image for a better view of the flag display which shows the teardrop formation.
Setting in the center of the display is the the "Battle Cross Monument" that symbolizes the honor and diginity for those who have given their lives in the defense of our Nation in all wars and conflict.
Click to Enlarge During the design and construction of the park it was determined as part of the park was a need for a pavilion affording the community a place for gatherings for organizations and individuals to have cook-outs, picnics or just a place to stop and rest. The pavilion is located at the lower level of the property near a creek which is always abundant with water year around. Water for the creek is provided by a spring which runs year around regardless of weather conditions.
Located near the entrance of the driveway to the pavilion is a bridge crossing the creek that leads to the location of the spring and just beyond the spring is the site of an old grist mill used by the early settlers. The dam accross the creek still intact along with the spillway that held the water wheel that powered the mill.
Click to Enlarge This landscape scene has been the back drop for several weddings that has taken place in the park. The Antique Bench in this scene was donated by the Simpson family in honor of the four brothers and a Nephew who served during WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Three of the brothers served in the Marine Corp during WWII, one served in the Navy during the Korean War and the Nephew served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. Rarely was the case to find three family members serving at the same time as was the simpson brothers, fortunately for the family all returned home after their service. A small monument honoring their service is planned for placement in the landscape scene. The orgin of the bench is unknown by the family but was part of the family since WWII.
Click to Enlarge Looking West as you leave the Maysville community via Marting Luther King Blvd. (AA Hwy 9), the park is the last notable attraction as you travel West from the community and as you enter the Maysville Community from an eastly direction, is the first notable attraction While the Maysville Community has many historical attractions dating back to the early Seventeen Hundreds the park has been blended into the history of the community for bestowing the honor, valor and bravery of those who gave their life from the RevoluutionaryWar, every war and conflict including and upto the war on terrosim.
Click to Enlarge The "The Battle Cross Monument" was chosen as the monument of choice because of what it stands for and that it represents the ultimate sacrafice made by all who have given of their life to protect and preserve our freedoms in the face of any and all emenies who wish to destroy our nation and way of life. Click the image to view the plaque that is posted on the Monument. The Maysville communityis extremely proud of the men and women who have served our nation and remains very supportive of those who have served and those who are serving now. The Maysville community is honored to call Home for the 299th Chemical Company of the Kentucky Army National Guard. This unit was deployed to serve our nation in Iraq on two different occasions and done so with distinction.
Click to Enlarge This view was taken looking Southeast and provides an overall view of the landscape of the rolling hills of the small historical valley. Not visible from this photo, but in the direction of the view, approxmiately one mile from the park is the site of one of the community's Historical Land Marks.. Just off of U.S. Sixty Eight south is a Colonial style village known as "Old Washington" , this little village has many buildings dating back to the late Seventeen Hundreds, a colonial setting worth visiting for a trip back to the historical times that was the foundation that has made our country great.
